The Welshman – dual-attached to both Monmore and Romford – had Icemans Girl, Cunnigar Yousir and Seaview Sydney all run out victorious in the Gold Cup.

Cooladerry Dust, meanwhile, put in a super-quick time of 37.41secs to triumph in the 630m Stayers event, on a night full of high-quality performances.

Dust was the quickest in the six Stayers heats while Richard Rees’ Churchfield Syd flew around in 27.88 for the most emphatic success in the Gold Cup.

Mark Wallis had two winners in the Stayers, with Mad For Sterling and the much-fancied New Destiny in fine fettle.

Coolavanny Mercy (Angela Harrison) and Romeo Crossfire (Tom Heilbron) were the other two winners in the Gold Cup while local hopes Aero Sacundai (Richie Taberner) and Vixons Filofax (Brian Thompson) made it through to the semi-finals.

A surprise in the Stayers saw heavy favourite Droopys Clue beaten by Dust – who put in arguably the most impressive display in front of a healthy crowd in Wolverhampton.

Queen Georgia (Elizabeth McNair), Savana Jackpot (Diane Henry) and Trickys Matilda (Robert Holt) also won in the Stayers.

Havana Top Note (McNair), Ballymac Johnjo (Wallis) and Monmore’s Aero Arran (Taberner) were among those to progress.
