Over the past 3 weeks, Doncaster has hosted the BGBF St Leger, a cat 2 open over 661m. These 3 weeks showcased some of the best British bred stayers, with the winner taking home £3000. There was also money up for grabs for the Breeders of the 6 finalists, with the winning breeder taking £500, and the others receiving £100. A great gesture and a brilliant way to celebrate the work of the British breeders.
At the final, there was a very minimal crowd, potentially due to the extremely cold temperatures. The track had very little atmosphere, being almost silent with the only noise coming from a few extremely passionate owners cheering on their dogs. The card itself was fantastic, with some great open races over various distances building up to the final.
Final (25th November)
The final began with a decently level break, with trap 1, Some Chance and trap 5, Keefil Delphine lacking early pace and trailing behind the group. Into the first 2 bends the standings remained the same, however coming out the bend Snooty Rose in the black jacket of trap 4 appeared to slip slightly. Into the third bend there was some trouble in behind which allowed the 4/5 favourite Moments of Magic to further establish its lead, with Fabulous Dyna quick to follow. The other 4 dogs remained many lengths behind, leaving the lead 2 to battle it out for first place. Coming out the last bend it looked like trap 3 had won, until Fabulous Dyna swooped in at the last moment to achieve first place. What an incredible race to end this competition!
Fabulous Dyna’s victory secures a second BGBF St Leger in a row for trainer Laurence Tuffin.
The commentary on this race has got to be one of the best of recent times. The commentator sounded so passionate, giving mention to every dog in the race, by name rather than number, and still managing to pick up on every detail! Some of the best commentary I’ve heard, hopefully others take note. Well done!
